The health of a patient’s gums play a major role in the health of his mouth and even his whole body. The gums, ligaments, and bone surrounding the teeth form a foundation in the mouth known as the periodontium. You may occasionally hear references to periodontal disease or periodontal treatment, and this refers to issues involving the gums. There are several signs that the gums may be unhealthy.

  • If your gums are red
  • If your gums bleed easily
  • If you experience persistent bad breath
  • If your gums are pulled away from your teeth
  • If your teeth are loose
  • If the alignment of your teeth has changed for biting

The good news is that, with proper and thorough gum treatment, it is entirely possible to return unhealthy gums to a natural and healthy state.

During an appointment with a hygienist, the health of your gums can be determined. Any issues of concern can be addressed. Under normal circumstances, the treatment will include a deep cleaning of your gums.

A process known as root planing may also be conducted which will involve local anesthetics and antibiotics. In more severe cases, there may be a need for surgery or tooth extraction. The best way to avoid the more serious options is to catch and treat any problems in their early stages.

The effects of gum disease can cause serious issues for oral health. The issues may range from gum inflammation to loss of teeth and even bone.

Without a doubt, the strongest preventative method for avoiding gum disease is good oral hygiene. Brushing, flossing, and rinsing are all protecting your gums in a powerful way.

Even with the best of oral hygiene, there are a few other issues that may possibly introduce gum disease. These issues can include increased stress, the onset of puberty, a pregnancy, certain medications, and certain nutritional deficiencies. These issues should not cause you undue alarm, but you should see your dentist if you see any of the early signs of gum disease.
